Sañjaya said: That king (Jayadratha) is indeed of great prowess; yet Arjuna will fulfill that vow. For his brothers too are valiant, and he has many forces at his side. In the shadow of grief and fierce resolve, the narrative stresses that a terrible pledge, once taken, must be carried through—supported by comradeship and collective strength amid the moral strain of war.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights steadfastness to a solemn vow (pratijñā) even under extreme grief and danger, while also implying that righteous resolve in war is sustained not merely by individual heroism but by the support of brothers and allied forces.

Sañjaya reassures Dhṛtarāṣṭra that although Jayadratha is powerful, Arjuna will still accomplish his fierce pledge (made in the wake of his son’s death), because the other Pāṇḍavas are brave and Arjuna is backed by substantial military strength.
