Bhīṣma’s Encouragement of Karṇa
उत्कला मेकला: पौण्ड्रा: कलिड्रन्ध्राश्न संयुगे निषादाश्ष त्रिगर्ताश्न बाह्लीकाश्न जितास्त्वया,“उत्कल, मेकल, पौण्ड्र, कलिंग, अंध्र, निषाद, त्रिगर्त और बाह्नलीक आदि देशोंके राजाओंको भी तुमने परास्त किया है
sañjaya uvāca | utkalā mekalāḥ pauṇḍrāḥ kaliṅgā andhrāś ca saṃyuge | niṣādāś ca trigartāś ca bāhlīkāś ca jitās tvayā ||
Sanjaya said: In the press of battle you have also subdued the kings of Utkala, Mekala, Paundra, Kalinga, Andhra, the Niṣādas, the Trigartas, and the Bāhlīkas. The report underscores your prowess and the sweeping reach of conquest, reminding the listener that martial success is being measured by the subjugation of many peoples and realms within the larger, morally fraught conflict of the war.
