Sanjaya said: All of them addressed Drona—who sought glory on the battlefield—saying, “Drona, lay down your weapons and look at us standing here. Until now you have fought unrighteously; now the time of your death has come. Therefore do not commit this cruel deed again. You are learned in the Vedas and their auxiliaries; and as a Brahmin especially devoted to truth and dharma, such brutality does not befit you.”

Educational Q&A

Even in war, conduct must align with dharma: learning, especially Brahminical commitment to truth and righteousness, is incompatible with deliberate cruelty and unrighteous fighting.

A group of warriors confront Drona on the battlefield, urging him to drop his weapons and stop fighting, accusing him of adharma and warning that his death is imminent; they appeal to his Vedic learning and Brahmin identity to shame him away from further cruelty.
