sañjaya uvāca | nivāraya balaṃ sarvaṃ vayaṃ yotsyāma pāṇḍavān | ataḥ āpa apanī sārī senā ko rok dījiye | pāṇḍavoṃ ke sātha ham log yuddha kareṅge |
Sanjaya said: “Hold back the entire army. We ourselves will fight the Pandavas. Therefore, restrain all your forces.” Hearing these words, King Duryodhana—surrounded by his brothers—was greatly delighted. Accepting Alayudha’s proposal, he replied accordingly.

The passage highlights how martial zeal and personal pride can drive leaders to accept risky proposals, emphasizing the ethical tension between responsible command (protecting one’s forces) and impulsive delight in aggressive initiatives.
A warrior (Alayudha) urges that the main army be held back while “we” engage the Pandavas directly. Duryodhana, pleased and surrounded by his brothers, accepts this proposal, signaling a strategic and emotionally charged decision in the ongoing war.
