Sañjaya said: In the thick of battle, Karṇa—son of the charioteer (Vaikartana)—was eager to engage a rākṣasa in combat. The line underscores the relentless escalation of the war: even the foremost human heroes are drawn into clashes with non-human, fearsome opponents, where prowess and resolve are tested beyond ordinary limits.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the kṣatriya ethos of meeting formidable threats directly: in war, a warrior’s resolve is measured by willingness to face even terrifying opponents, while the narrative also hints at how conflict expands beyond human limits when adharma-driven war intensifies.

Sañjaya reports that Karṇa (Vaikartana) is intent on fighting a rākṣasa in the ongoing battle, setting up a confrontation between a leading human champion and a supernatural adversary.
