The Vāsavī Spear’s Use, Post-Ghaṭotkaca Grief, and Vyāsa’s Counsel
ततः प्रववृते युद्ध द्रोणस्प सह पाण्डवै:
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ droṇaspaḥ saha pāṇḍavaiḥ
Sañjaya said: Thereafter the battle began in earnest, as Droṇa’s forces engaged the Pāṇḍavas—an escalation that frames the tragic tension between martial duty and the mounting cost of war.
सयजय उवाच
The verse underscores how war, once set in motion, advances through duty-bound action (kṣatriya-dharma) even as it deepens moral and human costs—highlighting the Mahābhārata’s recurring tension between obligation and consequence.
Sañjaya reports that the fighting now truly commences: Droṇa’s side and the Pāṇḍavas come into direct engagement, marking an intensification of the conflict under Droṇa’s leadership.
