sañjaya uvāca | devadānavagandharvān vijetāro hāvismitāḥ | svavīryavijaye yuktā naite parapārigrāhāḥ ||

Sanjaya said: They are conquerors even of the gods, the Dānavas, and the Gandharvas; yet they do not become proud or astonished on that account. Intent on victory through their own prowess, these Vṛṣṇi heroes are never dependent on others, nor do they submit to another’s control.

Educational Q&A

True prowess is joined with humility: even if one is capable of conquering the mightiest beings, one should not fall into pride or self-amazement. Ethical strength is shown by disciplined reliance on one’s own effort and refusal to become dependent or subjugated.

Sanjaya describes the exceptional martial capacity and character of the Vṛṣṇi heroes: they can defeat even divine and semi-divine opponents, yet remain steady-minded, pursuing victory through their own valor and not living under another’s domination.
