Adhyāya 141 — Night duels: Śaineya and Bhūriśravas; Droṇi and Ghaṭotkaca; Bhīma and Duryodhana
भीमस्य मतमाज्ञाय कर्णो बुद्धिमतां वर:
bhīmasya matam ājñāya karṇo buddhimatāṁ varaḥ
Sañjaya said: Understanding Bhīma’s intention, Karṇa—foremost among the wise—responded with discerning judgment, reading the enemy’s purpose amid the moral strain of battle.
संजय उवाच
Discernment in conflict: a capable leader reads an opponent’s intention (mata) before acting, balancing tactical necessity with the ethical weight of war.
Sañjaya narrates that Karṇa perceives Bhīma’s resolve and, as a strategist renowned for intelligence, prepares to respond accordingly within the unfolding battle.
