Duryodhana’s Incursion and the Tumult of Battle
वर्तमाने तथा रीद्रे संग्रामे लोमहर्षणे । संक्षये जगतस्तीव्रे युगान्त इव भारत,भरतनन्दन! वह रोमांचकारी भयंकर संग्राम प्रलयकालमें होनेवाले जगत्के भीषण संहार-सा उपस्थित हुआ था
vartamāne tathā raudre saṅgrāme lomaharṣaṇe | saṅkṣaye jagatas tīvre yugānta iva bhārata ||
Sañjaya said: As that fierce and hair-raising battle raged on, the terrible destruction there appeared like the world’s end itself, O Bhārata—like a cataclysmic dissolution overwhelming all beings.
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores how adharma-driven warfare escalates into indiscriminate devastation, evoking yugānta imagery to warn that unchecked violence can resemble cosmic dissolution in its moral and human cost.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the battle has become extraordinarily fierce and terrifying, with destruction so intense that it seems like the end of the age (yugānta).
