द्रोणपर्व (अध्याय १) — भीष्मनिधनानन्तरं धृतराष्ट्रस्य शोकः, सेनायाः स्थितिः, कर्णस्मरणं च

संजय! कुरुश्रेष्ठ देवव्रतके मारे जानेपर उस समय सब राजाओंने कौन-सा कार्य किया? यह मुझे बताओ ।। संजय उवाच शृणु राजन्नेकमना वचन ब्रुवतो मम । यत् ते पुत्रास्तदाकार्षुहते देवव्रते मृथे,संजयने कहा--राजन्! उस युद्धमें देवव्रत भीष्मके मारे जानेपर उस समय आपके पुत्रोंने जो कार्य किया, वह सब मैं बता रहा हूँ। मेरे इस कथनको आप एकाग्रचित्त होकर सुनिये
sañjaya uvāca | śṛṇu rājann ekamanā vacanaṃ bruvato mama | yat te putrās tad ākārṣuḥ hate devavrate mṛdhe ||
Sanjaya said: O King, listen with a focused mind to the words I speak. I shall tell you what your sons did at that time, when Devavrata (Bhishma) had been slain in the battle. The question presses on responsibility and consequence: after the fall of the grandsire, how did the Kauravas choose to act, and what course did they set for the war henceforth?
