tato droṇaś ca bhīṣmaś ca tathā śalyaś ca māriṣa | bhīmasenaṁ raṇe kruddhāś chādayāṁ cakrire śaraiḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Then, O noble one, Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and Śalya—angered in the thick of battle—covered Bhīmasena with a shower of arrows. The scene underscores how, in war, even the most venerable elders may be driven by wrath and duty to concentrate force against a formidable opponent, revealing the tension between righteous obligation and the passions that battle inflames.

The verse highlights the battlefield tension between dharma as duty (fighting as required by one’s role) and the rise of krodha (anger), showing how even revered elders can be swept into intense violence when confronting a powerful adversary.
Sañjaya reports that Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and Śalya, becoming angry during the fight, collectively target Bhīma and overwhelm him by raining arrows upon him.
