भीष्मस्य भीमसेन-निरोधः

Bhīṣma checks Bhīmasena; matched engagements intensify

ṛṣayo devagandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ | piśācā mānuṣāś caiva mṛgapakṣisarīsṛpāḥ ||

Sañjaya continues by noting the vast range of beings present and affected by the events: sages, divine musicians, yakṣas and rākṣasas, serpentine beings, spirits, and human beings—along with animals, birds, and creeping creatures. The verse underscores that the war’s upheaval is not confined to kings and warriors alone; it reverberates through the entire moral and cosmic order, drawing the attention of all classes of beings and reminding the listener of the universal consequences of adharma and violence.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the universality of moral consequence: war and adharma disturb not only human society but the wider cosmos, drawing the attention (and suffering) of sages, celestial beings, spirits, and all living creatures.

Sañjaya enumerates various classes of beings—divine, semi-divine, human, and animal—indicating the breadth of those present as witnesses or impacted by the events surrounding the Kurukṣetra war and its developments.
