Vāsudeva-Māhātmya: Duryodhana’s Inquiry and Bhīṣma’s Theological Account of Keśava

sañjaya uvāca | “dhṛtarāṣṭrake sabhī putroṃ tathā usake pakṣameṃ āye hue sabhī śreṣṭha nareśoṃ ko mārakara maiṃ prasannatāpūrvaka āja ajātaśatru rājā yudhiṣṭhira ko rājyase sampanna kara dūṃgā” || sañjaya uvāca (itīdam uktvā sa mahānubhāvaḥ sasmāra cakraṃ niśitaṃ purāṇam | sudarśanaṃ cintitamātrameva tasyāgrahastaṃ svayam āruroha ||) tataḥ sunābhaṃ vasudevaputraḥ sūryaprabhaṃ vajrasamaprabhāvam | kṣurāntam udyamya bhujena cakraṃ rathād avaplutya visṛjya vāhān ||

Sañjaya said: “Having slain all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and all the foremost kings who have come to his side, I shall gladly, this very day, establish King Yudhiṣṭhira—Ajātaśatru—securely in sovereignty.” Having spoken thus, the great-souled Śrī Kṛṣṇa remembered his ancient, razor-edged weapon—the Sudarśana discus. The moment he merely thought of it, it appeared of its own accord upon the forepart of his hand. Then Vāsudeva’s son lifted that discus—its hub beautifully formed, its radiance like the sun, its force like a thunderbolt, its rim sharp as a blade. Releasing the reins and leaping down from the chariot, Kṛṣṇa whirled the discus in his arm and rushed toward Bhīṣma across the battlefield, making the earth tremble with the pounding of his feet—like a lion springing to strike a proud, intoxicated lord of elephants. Ethically, the scene dramatizes the tension between restraint and righteous intervention: Kṛṣṇa’s fury arises to protect dharma and his devotee Arjuna, even as the larger war demands discipline and adherence to vowed roles.
