उत्पातवर्णनम् (Utpāta-varṇanam) — Catalogue of Portents
विषमं जनयन्त्येत आक्रन्दजननं महत् । त्रिषु सर्वेषु नक्षत्रनक्षत्रेषु विशाम्पते । गृथ्र: सम्पतते शीर्ष जनयन् भयमुन्तमम्,वह महान् युद्ध एवं विषम परिस्थिति पैदा करनेवाली है। राजन्! (अश्विनी आदि नक्षत्रोंकी तीन भागोंमें बाँटनेपर जो नौ-नौ नक्षत्रोंक तीन समुदाय होते हैं, वे क्रमशः अश्वपति, गजपति तथा नरपतिके छत्र कहलाते हैं; ये ही पापग्रहसे आक्रान्त होनेपर क्षत्रियोंका विनाश सूचित करनेके कारण “नक्षत्र-नक्षत्र” कहे गये हैं) इन तीनों अथवा सम्पूर्ण नक्षत्र-नक्षत्रोंमें शीर्षस्थानपर यदि पापग्रहसे वेध हो तो वह ग्रह महान् भय उत्पन्न करनेवाला होता है; इस समय ऐसा ही कुयोग आया है
viṣamaṃ janayanty ete ākrandajananaṃ mahat | triṣu sarveṣu nakṣatra-nakṣatreṣu viśāmpate | gṛdhraḥ sampatate śīrṣaṃ janayan bhayam uttamam ||
These portents generate a dire imbalance, giving rise to a great outcry. O lord of the people, across all the three divisions of the so‑called ‘nakṣatra-groups’, a vulture swoops upon the foremost point, producing the highest fear. Such a malignant conjunction has arisen now—an omen of calamity and slaughter in war, where dharma is eclipsed by violent disorder.
