Sañjaya said: Enraged, O best of the Bharatas, Bhīṣma hurled a blazing spear, driven by the force of his arms, toward Arjuna’s chariot. Seeing that weapon rushing in like a flaming thunderbolt, Arjuna—delighting the Pāṇḍavas—took five sharp arrows called bhallas in his hand and, in wrath, cut the oncoming spear, sent forth by Bhīṣma’s arms, into five pieces with those five arrows.

Educational Q&A

Even amid righteous warfare, excellence is shown through alertness and measured response: Arjuna protects his side by neutralizing a deadly weapon precisely, illustrating disciplined skill (yuddha-kauśala) rather than reckless fury.

Bhīṣma, angered, hurls a powerful spear toward Arjuna’s chariot. Arjuna sees it coming like a blazing thunderbolt and counters by shooting five sharp bhalla arrows, slicing the spear into five fragments before it can strike.
