virāṭas tu sahānīkaḥ sahasena jayadratham | vṛddhakṣatrasya dāyādam āsasāda parantapa parantapa ||
Sanjaya said: Then Virāṭa, advancing with his full battle-array and troops, charged at Jayadratha, the heir of Vṛddhakṣatra. In the press of war, the king’s assault is portrayed as a decisive, duty-bound act of kṣatriya conduct—meeting aggression with organized resistance and confronting a principal adversary directly.

The verse highlights kṣatriya-dharma in practice: when conflict is joined, a leader must act with resolve and organized strength, confronting key threats directly rather than shrinking from responsibility.
Sanjaya reports that Virāṭa, supported by his troops and battle formation, advances and attacks Jayadratha, identified as the heir of Vṛddhakṣatra, marking a direct clash between prominent warriors.
