Sañjaya said: In that great battle, the victory-seeking soldiers—gathered together with the aim of killing one another—engaged in a terribly fierce combat. Thus ends the one-hundred-and-fifteenth chapter of the Bhīṣma Parva of the Śrī Mahābhārata, within the section on Bhīṣma’s fall, concerning Bhīṣma’s instruction.

Educational Q&A

The verse functions mainly as a colophon and narrative summation: it underscores the grim reality of war—victory-desire drives warriors into mutual slaughter—while framing the surrounding material as Bhīṣma’s instructive discourse (upadeśa), reminding the reader that ethical reflection is embedded within the battlefield narrative.

Sañjaya reports that a fierce battle erupted among assembled soldiers intent on killing one another to secure victory. The passage then formally closes the chapter, identifying it as part of Bhīṣma Parva, within the subsection on Bhīṣma’s fall, and connected to Bhīṣma’s teachings.
