Arjuna and Bhima’s pressure; escalation toward Bhishma
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | janārdana! pṛṣṭe te asmān satyaṃ ca hitam ca vakṣyanti | śrīkṛṣṇa! yathā te vakṣyanti yuddhe tathā kariṣyāmi || sa no jayasya dātā syān mantrasya ca dṛḍhavrataḥ | bālāḥ pitrā vihīnāḥ sma tena saṃvardhitā vayam ||
Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Janārdana, when questioned, he will tell us what is true and beneficial. Śrī Kṛṣṇa, whatever he advises, I shall act accordingly in this war. That steadfast keeper of vows may become for us both the giver of victory and the giver of counsel. When we were children and bereft of our father, it was he who nurtured and raised us.”
Seek guidance from a morally steadfast elder who speaks what is both true (satya) and beneficial (hita), and respond with disciplined obedience; gratitude toward one’s benefactors remains a dharmic obligation even amid conflict.
Yudhiṣṭhira tells Kṛṣṇa that if Bhīṣma is questioned, he will give truthful and welfare-oriented counsel; Yudhiṣṭhira vows to follow that advice in the war, recalling Bhīṣma’s past role in raising the Pāṇḍavas after they became fatherless.
