Babhruvāhana’s Lament and Appeal for Expiation (प्रायश्चित्त-याचना)
उलूपी चिन्तयामास तदा संजीवनं मणिम् । स चोपातिष्ठत तदा पन्नगानां परायणम्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाले जनमेजय! पिताके शोकसे संतप्त हुआ मणिपुरनरेश बभ्रुवाहन जब माताके साथ आमरण उपवासका व्रत लेकर बैठ गया, तब उलूपीने संजीवनमणिका स्मरण किया। नागोंके जीवनकी आधारभूत वह मणि उसके स्मरण करते ही वहाँ आ गयी
ulūpī cintayāmāsa tadā saṃjīvanaṃ maṇim | sa copātiṣṭhata tadā pannagānāṃ parāyaṇam ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: At that time Ulūpī reflected upon the Saṃjīvana jewel, the life-restoring gem. And as soon as she remembered it, that jewel—held to be the very refuge and sustaining support of the Nāgas—appeared there. The episode underscores a moral urgency: when grief and self-destructive vows arise, compassionate intervention and life-preserving means are to be employed to restore what is right and living.
