Vāyu said: “O brāhmaṇa, compassion for all beings is what is dearest to my heart. Wherever people live by that dharma—turning away from sinful acts and choosing restraint—I dwell with them. And, O Bhārgava, for the protection and re-establishment of dharma, I move through the three worlds, assuming many forms and outward guises, acting in ways suited to each role.”

Educational Q&A

Compassion toward all beings is presented as a supreme dharma, and the divine is said to ‘dwell with’ those who practice it by turning away from sinful actions; sustaining dharma may involve taking diverse forms suited to circumstances.

Vāyu addresses Bhārgava, explaining his affinity with the dharma of universal compassion and stating that he manifests across the three worlds in various forms and roles to protect and re-establish dharma among humans.
