Vāyu-deva said: “It is bound up with action and its causes; it spreads out through attachment and grows long and far-reaching. It is agitated by greed and craving, and it arises from a bewildering, many-formed ignorance.”
वायुदेव उवाच
The verse diagnoses the inner mechanism of moral downfall: actions become entangled with their motives, attachment proliferates, and greed-driven craving agitates the mind; the root is ignorance, so ethical clarity requires discernment and restraint.
Vāyu-deva is speaking in a didactic mode, characterizing a harmful mental force (such as desire/attachment) by listing its causes and effects—how it expands, disturbs, and ultimately springs from ignorance—so the listener can recognize and counter it.
