Adhyāya 40: Brahmā on Mahān (The Great Principle) and the All-Pervading Puruṣa

evaṁ hi yo veda guhāśayaṁ prabhuṁ paraṁ purāṇaṁ puruṣaṁ viśvarūpam | hiraṇmayaṁ buddhimatāṁ parāṁ gatiṁ sa buddhimān buddhim atītya tiṣṭhati ||

Vāyu said: Whoever truly knows the Supreme Lord who dwells in the secret cave of the heart—transcendent, primeval, the Cosmic Person of universal form—radiant like gold and the highest goal of the wise, that person becomes truly wise and stands beyond the limits of ordinary intellect. The teaching places inner realization above mere reasoning: by recognizing the self-manifest, all-sufficient Lord within, one crosses the boundary of mental calculation and attains the highest good.

Educational Q&A

Real wisdom is not mere intellectual skill but direct recognition of the Supreme Lord as the inner indweller (guhāśaya). Knowing Him as the ancient Cosmic Person of universal form, the seeker transcends the limits of discursive intellect and becomes established in the highest state.

Vāyu is instructing the listener about the nature of the Supreme: self-manifest, radiant, and the ultimate goal of the wise. The verse functions as a doctrinal affirmation within the Ashvamedhika Parva’s broader post-war spiritual and ethical instruction, emphasizing inner realization and liberation.
