Brahma-vidyā: Satya–Tapas and the Enumeration of Tattvas
Arjuna–Vāsudeva framed dialogue
jyotir ākāśam ādityo vāyur indraḥ prajāpatiḥ | nopaiti yāvad adhyātmaṁ tāvad etān na paśyati ||
Vāyu said: “Light, space, the Sun, the Wind, Indra, and Prajāpati—so long as one has not attained the knowledge of the inner Self, one does not truly perceive the real nature of these cosmic principles. When Self-knowledge arises, their truth is understood as well.”
Without adhyātma-jñāna (realization of the inner Self), one’s understanding of even the greatest cosmic powers—light, space, sun, wind, Indra, Prajāpati—remains superficial. Self-knowledge clarifies the true nature of these principles and removes mistaken perception.
Vāyu is instructing the listener that spiritual insight is the key to right vision: until the inner Self is known, the realities symbolized by major deities and elements are not properly ‘seen’; with Self-realization, their essential truth becomes intelligible.
