Vāyu said: In former times, the sages, having approached one another and questioning among themselves, gathered together—Prajāpati Dakṣa, Bharadvāja, Gautama, and the Bhārgava as well. Worn out from wandering through many paths in pursuit of right action and the highest good, they united in inquiry and sought a definitive understanding from the highest source of wisdom.

Educational Q&A

When even great sages become uncertain after traversing many approaches to right action, they turn to mutual inquiry and seek authoritative clarification. The verse foregrounds humility, dialogue, and the disciplined pursuit of dharma through questioning rather than dogmatism.

Vāyu begins an illustrative account: eminent sages—Dakṣa, Bharadvāja, Gautama, and a Bhārgava—come together, consult one another, and set out to resolve their doubts about the highest good and proper conduct by approaching a supreme source of knowledge (expanded in the surrounding passage).
