Educational Q&A

The verse frames an ethical norm: a virtuous person should not contemptuously abandon a woman who has approached in love and devotion; reciprocity and responsible conduct are presented as part of social-dharmic propriety.

A woman named Rūyu directly addresses a king, declaring her desire and devotion and urging him to accept her, supporting her request by citing that the good condemn the abandonment of women who come driven by love.
