Ādi-parva Adhyāya 98 — Paraśurāma’s kṣatriya suppression; Dīrghatamas, Bali, Sudēṣṇā, and the birth of Aṅga

Pratīpa said: “Through sons who are both virtuous and dear, your son will attain heaven.” In the surrounding exchange, the maiden sets a moral condition for marriage: the prince must accept her conduct without suspicion or censure. If he honors that restraint and trusts her, she promises to deepen her love toward him, and the righteous, beloved sons born of her will become the cause of his heavenly attainment.
The verse links a householder-king’s spiritual destiny to dharmic progeny: righteous and beloved sons are presented as a conduit of merit leading to svarga. Ethically, the surrounding context stresses trust and restraint—judging or controlling a spouse’s actions violates the agreed dharma and undermines harmony.
Pratīpa speaks about the future welfare of his lineage, stating that his son will attain heaven through virtuous sons. In the same episode, a divine maiden proposes marriage on a strict condition: the prince must never question or criticize her actions; if he accepts, she will love him and bear worthy sons.
