Pratīpa said: “Those kings of your lineage who have become renowned—indeed their virtue is held to be the highest. O knower of dharma, I will enter into marriage with your son on a condition, O lord: whatever conduct I adopt here must be accepted by your son; he should never question it or sit in judgment over it. Living by this agreement, I will deepen my affection toward him. And through the righteous and beloved sons born from me, your son will attain the heavenly world.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharma as fidelity to one’s pledged word (samaya). Ethical stability in relationships—especially royal marriages—rests on honoring agreed conditions without suspicion or interference; merit (puṇya) and spiritual reward are also linked to righteous progeny and conduct.

Pratīpa speaks about the famed virtue of the lineage and states a condition for a marriage alliance involving his son: the son must accept her actions without questioning. She promises affection and declares that virtuous sons born from her will bring the son heavenly attainment.
