Yayāti–Indra Dialogue and Aṣṭaka’s Inquiry
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: anyonyam evam uktvā tu samprahasya ca te mithaḥ | jagāma Bhārgavī veśma tathyam ity avajagmuṣī ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus spoken to one another, the two of them laughed together. The Bhārgavī (Devayānī), judging that it was indeed true, went silently back to the palace—accepting, at least for the moment, the force of Śarmiṣṭhā’s words.
The verse highlights a subtle ethical moment: when confronted with a pointed truth in a dispute, one may recognize its validity and withdraw rather than escalate. It suggests that acknowledging truth—even unwillingly—can restrain further harm, though it may not resolve the underlying pride or rivalry.
After exchanging words and laughing together, Devayānī (called Bhārgavī) comes to feel that Śarmiṣṭhā’s statement is true. She then goes back to the palace/residence quietly, marking a pause in their confrontation and moving the story to the next development.
