Devayānī said: “O King, accept me only as one duly given by my father; for I have chosen you, but let the marriage be concluded through my father’s formal gift. Since you are not asking for me as a suitor, and will receive me only when I am given, you need not fear his displeasure. Wait here for a moment, O King; I shall send word to my father at once.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic propriety in marriage: personal choice is acknowledged, yet the union is to be regularized through the guardian’s formal consent and gifting (dāna), reducing conflict and ensuring social legitimacy.
Devayānī tells the king (Yayāti) that although she has chosen him, he should accept her only when her father formally gives her in marriage; she asks him to wait briefly while she sends a message to her father (Śukra).
