Yayāti’s Vānaprastha Austerities and Ascent to Heaven
Yayāti said: “Know this, O daughter of Uśanas (Śukra)—may good befall you. O noble lady, I am not a suitable match for you. For kings are not to be given in marriage, O Devayānī, by your father.” In this exchange, Yayāti frames his refusal as an ethical and social constraint: a Kṣatriya king should not accept a bride in a manner that violates accepted norms of marriage and propriety, even when the woman is worthy.
Personal desire is restrained by dharma: Yayāti emphasizes that marriage must follow accepted ethical and social norms, and that status and proper procedure matter in upholding propriety.
Yayāti addresses Devayānī respectfully but declines her as a match, citing that kings should not be married off by her father (Śukra) in a way he deems improper, thus presenting a dharma-based hesitation.
