Yayāti and Śarmiṣṭhā: request in ṛtu and discourse on truth and dharma
yathā mama gurur nityaṁ mānyaḥ śukraḥ pitā tava | devayāni tathaiva tvaṁ naivaṁ māṁ vaktum arhasi, devayāni ||
Kacha said: “Just as your father Śukra—my teacher—is always worthy of my honor, so too are you. Therefore, Devayānī, you ought not to speak to me in this manner.”
The verse emphasizes maryādā (propriety): respect owed to one’s guru extends to the guru’s household, and ethical speech requires restraint—one should not address another harshly or improperly, especially within relationships grounded in reverence.
Kacha addresses Devayānī, reminding her that since her father Śukra is his revered teacher, she too deserves honor from him; on that basis he rebukes her, saying she should not speak to him in such a manner.
