Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence

Duṣyanta says: “The good live happily, for they do not go hunting for faults. But fools, ever intent on spotting others’ defects, live by fault-finding. And in the very matters for which the virtuous are rightly censured by others, such people turn around and accuse the virtuous of the same—using those charges as a pretext to slander them.”
Happiness aligns with a virtuous disposition that does not obsess over others’ faults, while misery and moral confusion arise from habitual fault-finding and slander—especially when one projects one’s own blameworthy traits onto the good.
Duṣyanta delivers a moral observation contrasting the conduct of the virtuous and the foolish: the virtuous refrain from scrutinizing defects and thus live peacefully, whereas fools take satisfaction in criticizing saints and even accuse them of the very faults for which the wicked themselves deserve censure.
