Urvashī pūrvacittiś ca sahajanyā ca menakā | Viśvācī ca ghṛtācī ca ṣaḍ evāpsarasāṁ varāḥ ||
Duṣyanta said: “Urvashī, Pūrvacitti, Sahajanyā, Menakā, Viśvācī, and Ghṛtācī—these six apsarases are regarded as the foremost among all the celestial nymphs.”
The verse functions less as a moral injunction and more as a cultural classification: it highlights how excellence (vara) is recognized within a group, reflecting the epic’s tendency to order the mythic world by naming and ranking renowned figures.
Duṣyanta is speaking and lists six famous apsarases—Urvashī, Pūrvacitti, Sahajanyā, Menakā, Viśvācī, and Ghṛtācī—stating that they are considered the foremost among apsarases.
