Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having entrusted the burden of kingship to Bharata, King Duṣyanta felt his life’s duty fulfilled. After ruling for a full hundred years, the lord of men performed many gifts and, in the end, attained the heavenly world. Thereupon the famed discus of the great-souled King Bharata began to range everywhere—radiant, divine, unconquerable—moving on with a mighty roar that resounded through the whole world.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights rājadharma: a king fulfills duty by responsibly transferring power, ruling justly, and practicing dāna. Ethical completion of one’s obligations (kṛtakṛtyatā) and generosity are presented as pathways to lasting fame and heavenly merit.

Duṣyanta hands over the kingdom to Bharata, rules (in the account) for a full hundred years, gives many donations, and then departs to Svarga. After this, Bharata’s renowned, radiant, invincible cakra begins to move about, resounding across the world—signifying Bharata’s expanding sovereignty and fame.
