tasmād bhavatv ayaṁ nāmnā bharato nāma te sutaḥ |
Vaiśampāyana said: “Therefore, let this son of yours be known by the name Bharata. Since, at the behest of the gods, you will undertake his maintenance and upbringing, he will become celebrated as Bharata.”
The verse links name, duty, and identity: a child’s recognized status and fame are grounded in rightful acceptance and responsible upbringing, framed as a dharmic obligation endorsed by higher authority.
The narrator reports the formal naming of the child as Bharata, explaining that because the father will ‘bear’ (support and raise) him—under divine prompting—the boy will be renowned by that name.
