On the bank of that river stood the delightful and foremost hermitage of the venerable, great-souled sage Kāśyapa—an ashram frequented and served by companies of great seers. The scene underscores the Mahābhārata’s moral geography: sacred spaces sustained by disciplined sages become refuges of order, learning, and dharma amid the uncertainties of worldly life.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical ideal of the āśrama as a dharmic center: a well-ordered life of restraint, study, and service creates sanctified spaces where wisdom is preserved and seekers are supported.

Vaiśaṃpāyana describes a beautiful, eminent hermitage on a riverbank belonging to the revered sage Kāśyapa, a place regularly visited and attended by groups of great seers—setting a sacred setting for subsequent events.
