Adhyāya 57: Indra’s Counsel to King Vasu; Origin of Satyavatī; Birth of Vyāsa

śaunaka uvāca | bhairavo muṇḍavedāṅgaḥ piśaṅgaś codrapārakaḥ | ṛṣabho vegavān nāgaḥ piṇḍārako mahāhanū ||

Śaunaka said: “Bhairava, Muṇḍavedāṅga, Piśaṅga, and Udrapāraka; Ṛṣabha, the swift serpent Vegavān, Piṇḍāraka, and Mahāhanu—these are among the nāgas born in Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s lineage. They were as fast as the wind and exceedingly venomous.” In context, the passage functions as a solemn roll-call: a remembrance of a powerful serpent clan whose many members later perish in the sacrificial fire, underscoring the epic’s recurring warning about the destructive consequences of enmity, vengeance, and ritual violence when untempered by restraint.

Educational Q&A

By listing the nāgas famed for speed and venom and recalling their later destruction in the sacrificial fire, the text highlights the fragility of power and the moral danger of cycles of hostility—where vengeance and unchecked violence, even when ritualized, lead to collective ruin.

Śaunaka continues a genealogical enumeration of prominent nāgas associated with Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s serpent lineage, naming several individuals as part of a broader catalogue connected to the later episode of the serpent-sacrifice (sarpa-satra) in which many nāgas perish.
