Ādi-parva Adhyāya 3 — Janamejaya’s Rite, Dhaumya’s Parīkṣā, and Uttanka’s Kuṇḍala Quest (सर्पसत्रप्रस्तावना–गुरुपरीक्षा–उत्तङ्कोपाख्यान)

tatparitoṣāc ca śreyaḥ sarvajñatāṃ cāvāpa | eṣā tasyāpi parīkṣā vedasya |
By that (guru’s) satisfaction he attained true welfare and also omniscience. This, too, was the test concerning the Veda: through pleasing the teacher in the gurukula, one gains the highest good and comprehensive knowledge. Thus is narrated the account of the Veda’s examination.
राम उवाच
Sacred learning is validated not only by recitation but by character and service: pleasing the teacher through disciplined conduct is presented as a decisive ‘test’ that yields śreyaḥ (the highest good) and comprehensive understanding.
The speaker states that the protagonist, by satisfying his guru, attained welfare and omniscience; this is framed as an account of how the Veda itself ‘tests’ a student—through the requirement of guru-satisfaction in the gurukula.
