Garuḍa’s Breach of the Amṛta-Guard and Boons with Viṣṇu; Encounter with Indra (Ādi-parva, Adhyāya 29)
रोषदोषानुषज्ेण तिर्यग्योनिगतावुभौ । परस्परद्वेषरतौ प्रमाणबलदर्पिताौ,रोष और लोभरूपी दोषके सम्बन्धसे उन दोनोंको तिर्यक्-योनिमें जाना पड़ा है। वे दोनों विशालकाय जन्तु पूर्व जन्मके वैरका अनुसरण करके अपनी विशालता और बलके घमण्डमें चूर हो एक-दूसरेसे द्वेष रखते हुए इस सरोवरमें रहते हैं। इन दोनोंमें एक जो सुन्दर महान् गजराज है, वह जब सरोवरके तटपर आता है, तब उसके चिग्घाड़नेकी आवाज सुनकर जलके भीतर शयन करनेवाला विशालकाय कछुआ भी पानीसे ऊपर उठता है। उस समय वह सारे सरोवरको मथ डालता है
kaśyapa uvāca | roṣadoṣānuṣaṅgeṇa tiryagyonigatāv ubhau | parasparadveṣaratau pramāṇabaladarpitau ||
Kashyapa said: ‘Because they became entangled in the faults of anger, both of them have fallen into an animal birth. Clinging to their former enmity, intoxicated with their great size and strength, they dwell in this lake, each delighting in hatred of the other.’
कश्यप उवाच
Anger and its associated faults, when nurtured into lasting hatred and pride, degrade one’s moral state and can lead to a lower rebirth; unresolved enmity perpetuates suffering across lives.
Kashyapa explains that two beings, bound by anger and mutual hatred from a previous enmity, have taken animal births and now live in a lake, each driven by pride in strength and size and by hostility toward the other.
