Entry into Khāṇḍavaprastha and Description of Indraprastha’s Founding

Vaiśampāyana said: “In Vidura’s presence we are unable to speak to you of your fault. But now, since this is a private moment, we will say it: what is it that you intend to do? You have begun to treat the rise of your enemies as though it were your own rise, and in Vidura’s hearing you repeatedly praise our adversaries.”

Educational Q&A

Ethically sensitive criticism should be offered with discernment: one may refrain from exposing another’s faults in a public or respected setting, but in private one should speak frankly for the sake of dharma and right conduct.

The speaker reports that certain persons, unable to rebuke someone openly in Vidura’s presence, choose a secluded moment to question that person’s intentions and to object to the repeated praise of their enemies.
