Vaiśampāyana said: When Vidura heard that Draupadī had been won and that Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons had returned ashamed, their pride shattered, he felt inwardly pleased. Then he went to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and, speaking in a tone of wonder, said: “O King, how fortunate we are that the Kuru line is being strengthened.” The verse highlights Vidura’s ethical satisfaction at a rightful outcome and his concern for the welfare and continuity of the dynasty rather than for partisan triumph.

Educational Q&A

The verse contrasts dharmic satisfaction with ego-driven rivalry: Vidura rejoices not in another’s humiliation but in a rightful, stabilizing outcome for the dynasty. It underscores the ethical ideal that a counselor should prioritize the long-term welfare of the realm and lineage over factional pride.

News reaches Vidura that the Pāṇḍavas have obtained Draupadī and that Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s sons have returned embarrassed and humbled. Vidura is inwardly pleased and goes to Dhṛtarāṣṭra to speak, expressing wonder and framing the event as good fortune for the growth of the Kuru line.
