Karna’s Counsel on Strategy toward the Pāṇḍavas
yatnena tu sa taṃ harṣaṃ sannigṛhya parantapaḥ | anurūpaṃ tadā vācā pratyuvāca yudhiṣṭhiram ||
But he, the scorcher of foes, restrained that surge of joy with deliberate effort, and then replied to Yudhiṣṭhira in words fitting to what had been said—showing self-control and propriety even in a moment of inner elation.
The verse highlights dharmic restraint: even when joy arises strongly, a noble person checks impulsive emotion and responds with measured, appropriate speech, honoring context and the listener.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that a heroic figure (called 'Parantapa') feels a rush of happiness but consciously suppresses it, then answers Yudhiṣṭhira in a manner suited to Yudhiṣṭhira’s words and the situation.
