तत:ः शतसहसांशुर्म थ्यमानात्तु सागरात् । प्रसन्नात्मा समुत्पन्न: सोम: शीतांशुरुज्ज्वल:,फिर तो उस महासागरसे अनन्त किरणोंवाले सूर्यके समान तेजस्वी, शीतल प्रकाशसे युक्त, श्वैतवर्ण एवं प्रसन्नात्मा चन्द्रमा प्रकट हुआ
tataḥ śatasahasāṃśur mathyamānāt tu sāgarāt | prasannātmā samutpannaḥ somaḥ śītāṃśur ujjvalaḥ ||
Then, as the great ocean was being churned, Soma—the Moon—arose from it: radiant with cool beams, bright like a sun of countless rays, and serene in nature. The episode underscores that from sustained, disciplined effort (even amid turmoil) can emerge gifts that soothe and stabilize the world, not merely those that dazzle it.
शौनक उवाच
The verse highlights that persistent, collective striving can yield outcomes that are not only powerful but also beneficent—symbolized by the Moon’s cool, calming radiance—suggesting that true prosperity includes what brings balance and peace.
During the churning of the ocean (samudra-manthana), the Moon (Soma), described as bright and cool-rayed with a serene nature, emerges from the ocean as one of the wondrous products of the churning.
