The Brahmin said: A wife’s constant steadfastness in what is pleasing and beneficial to her husband surpasses even great sacrifices, austerities, strict observances, and the many kinds of gifts. The teaching frames devoted, welfare-oriented conduct within marriage as a high form of dharma, valued above external ritual performance when it is sustained and sincere.

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that sustained, welfare-oriented devotion within household life—specifically a wife’s constant commitment to what is pleasing and beneficial to her husband—is regarded as a higher dharmic achievement than external religious acts like sacrifice, austerity, vows, or charity.

A Brahmin speaker is instructing or advising by ranking forms of merit: he elevates everyday ethical steadiness in marital duty over prominent ritual and ascetic practices, emphasizing inner commitment expressed through conduct.
