The Brahmin woman said: “You should not give way to grief at all, as ordinary people do. You are a learned man; for one like you, this is not a time meant for lamentation.”
ब्राह्मण उवाच
The verse urges restraint and clarity in the face of suffering: a person grounded in knowledge and duty should not collapse into ordinary lamentation, but respond with steadiness and discernment.
A Brahmin woman addresses her husband (described as a learned/physician-like figure) and tries to dissuade him from grief, framing his learning and role as incompatible with despair at this moment.
