Drupada’s Putrakāmeṣṭi: The Sacrificial Birth of Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Kṛṣṇā
अहं हि मनसा ध्याता सर्वान् नेष्यामि व: सदा । (न यातुधान्यहं त्वार्ये न चास्मि रजनीचरी । कन्या रक्षस्सु साध्व्यस्मि राज्ञि सालकटड्कटी ।। पुत्रेण तव संयुक्ता युवतिर्देववर्णिनी । सर्वान् वो5हमुपस्थास्ये पुरस्कृत्य वृकोदरम् ।। अप्रमत्ता प्रमत्तेषु शुश्रूषुरसकृत् त्वहम् ।) वृजिनात् तारयिष्यामि दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च,“आप अपने मनसे जब-जब मेरा स्मरण करेंगे, तब-तब सदा ही (सेवामें उपस्थित हो) मैं आपलोगोंको अभीष्ट स्थानोंमें पहुँचा दिया करूँगी। आर्ये! मैं न तो यातुधानी हूँ और न निशाचरी ही हूँ। महारानी! मैं राक्षस जातिकी सुशीला कन्या हूँ और मेरा नाम सालकटंकटी है। मैं देवोपम कान्तिसे युक्त और युवावस्थासे सम्पन्न हूँ। मेरे हृदयका संयोग आपके पुत्र भीमसेनके साथ हुआ है। मैं वृकोदरको सामने रखकर आप सब लोगोंकी सेवामें उपस्थित रहूँगी। आपलोग असावधान हों, तो भी मैं पूरी सावधानी रखकर निरन्तर आपकी सेवामें संलग्न रहूँगी। आपको संकटोंसे बचाऊँगी। दुर्गण एवं विषम स्थानोंमें यदि आप शीघ्रतापूर्वक अभीष्ट लक्ष्यतक जाना चाहते हों तो मैं आप सब लोगोंको अपनी पीठपर बिठाकर वहाँ पहुँचाऊँगी। आपलोग मुझपर कृपा करें, जिससे भीमसेन मुझे स्वीकार कर लें
ahaṁ hi manasā dhyātā sarvān neṣyāmi vaḥ sadā | (na yātudhānī ahaṁ tvārye na cāsmi rajanīcarī | kanyā rakṣaḥsu sādhvī asmi rājñi sāla-kaṭaṅkaṭī || putreṇa tava saṁyuktā yuvatīr deva-varṇinī | sarvān vo ’ham upasthāsye puraskṛtya vṛkodaram || apramattā pramatteṣu śuśrūṣur asakṛt tv aham | vṛjināt tārayiṣyāmi durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca ||)
Vaiśaṁpāyana said: “If you but remember me in your mind, I shall always lead you all to your desired destinations. Noble lady, I am neither a yātudhānī nor a night-roaming demoness. O queen, I am a virtuous maiden among the Rākṣasas; my name is Sālakaṭaṅkaṭī. Radiant like a god and in the bloom of youth, my heart is joined to your son Bhīmasena. Placing Vṛkodara at the forefront, I shall attend upon you all in service. Even if you become careless, I shall remain vigilant, serving you repeatedly and without fail. I will deliver you from calamity, and in difficult and uneven places, if you wish to reach your goal swiftly, I will carry you upon my back and take you there. Show me favor, so that Bhīma may accept me.”
