vaiśampāyana uvāca | evam ukteṣu rājñā tu pāṇḍuputreṣu bhārata | duryodhanaḥ paraṃ harṣam agacchat sa durātmavān |

Vaiśampāyana said: O descendant of Bharata, when the king had thus spoken to the sons of Pāṇḍu, the wicked-minded Duryodhana was filled with great delight. The narrative turns on a morally charged contrast: the king’s public instruction is met by Duryodhana’s private joy, hinting at concealed intent and the ethical corrosion that accompanies envy and the pursuit of power through deceit.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how inner intention reveals moral character: Duryodhana’s joy at the king’s directive foreshadows harmful design. It cautions that political decisions can be ethically compromised when driven by envy and concealed malice, marking a drift from dharma toward adharma.

After the king issues instructions concerning the Pāṇḍavas (contextually, their departure toward Vāraṇāvata), Duryodhana reacts with intense happiness. This reaction signals that the order serves his private agenda and sets up the subsequent conspiracy involving the lac house.
