Bhīma’s Search for Water and the Forest Halt

Vaiśampāyana said: O King, in that battle neither the directions, nor the sky, nor even the earth could be made out—nothing at all was visible. For the mighty Arjuna, bearer of the Gāṇḍīva, had spread a dense darkness by means of his arrows. The scene underscores how martial prowess can overwhelm ordinary perception itself, turning the battlefield into a realm where clarity and orientation vanish.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how unchecked force in war can eclipse clarity itself—symbolically showing that violence creates moral and perceptual darkness, where orientation (diśaḥ) and discernment are lost.

During a fierce combat, Arjuna releases such a thick volley of arrows that the battlefield appears dark; observers cannot distinguish directions, sky, or earth.
