Ādi-parva Adhyāya 132 — Duryodhana’s Instructions to Purocana at Vāraṇāvata

Lākṣāgṛha Planning

tato duryodhanādīṁs tān dhārtarāṣṭrān mahāyaśāḥ | tenaiva kramayogena jijñāsuḥ paryapṛcchat tad-anantaram ||

Then the illustrious teacher summoned Duryodhana and the other sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra in the same order. Wishing to test them, he questioned them in the very same manner. The episode underscores that instruction and evaluation are to be applied impartially, even when the students’ temperaments and future choices will diverge in matters of dharma.

Educational Q&A

A teacher’s duty is to assess students consistently and without favoritism; the same standards are applied to all, even when their later ethical choices differ.

After examining the earlier group in a set order, the teacher next calls Duryodhana and the other Kaurava princes and questions them in the same sequence to test their abilities and dispositions.
