Having spoken thus to those young princes, Droṇa—subduer of foes—cast his own finger-ring into that waterless well. The act is a deliberate test: by creating a difficult task, he probes their resolve, ingenuity, and readiness to act under a teacher’s challenge, hinting that true capability is shown not by words but by effective response in adversity.

Competence is proved through action under constraint: a teacher may set a hard, even puzzling task to reveal steadiness, resourcefulness, and obedience—qualities essential for disciplined learning and later responsibility.
After addressing the princes, Droṇa drops his ring into a dry well, setting up a practical challenge for the students—implicitly inviting them to retrieve it and thereby demonstrate their capability.
